Data Protection Law

The right to the protection of individuals in the context of automated data processing is a distinct legal right that originated in Europe in the 1970s. It regulates how personal data is processed whether or not the information is private. In the EU, data protection and privacy are separate fundamental rights. Data protection laws now exist in many countries worldwide. The United States does not recognize an equivalent, as a distinct legal right separate from privacy.
